Speech and language evaluations are a play based method to determine if a child is exhibiting delays in their speech or language development. Evaluations look at all areas of language including receptive (understanding of language), expressive (expression of language), speech sounds (how sounds are produced), pragmatic (social use of language), as well as play skills. The evaluation is conducted through a combination of parent report (you are your child's best advocate) and direct interactions with your child. At the end of the evaluation, you will receive feedback on your child's skills as, a recommendation as to whether or not they would benefit from ongoing speech therapy, and some strategies to start encouraging language development right away.
Evidence shows that speech therapy for infants and toddlers is most effective when provided in the natural environment (home, daycare, or community) with the caregivers present and actively engaged in sessions. Change does not happen during the hour I spend with your child, it occurs during all the other hours of the day that you spend interacting with your child and participating in your daily routines. We will use your toys, furniture, and whatever else you have around so that you know exactly how to replicate strategies using the materials you already have on hand. Sessions are conducted through play, but with an emphasis on problem solving and coaching caregivers on how to facilitate language opportunities.
If your child is determined eligible for speech therapy, frequency of sessions will be decided following the evaluation based on the child's need and parent availability. Most children are seen for weekly or bi-weekly sessions. Sessions are generally an hour long, but may vary depending on the individual child and situation.
Identifying children who have developmental delays early is the best way to improve outcomes! If you are unsure whether or not your child would benefit from an evaluation, I offer free developmental screenings that can tell you whether or not a full evaluation is warranted.

I have spent nearly a decade working in early intervention in a variety of roles. Working with infants and toddlers is my true passion and where I specialized my skills and trainings throughout graduate school and in continuing education. I have experience working with receptive and expressive language delays, speech sound disorders, autism spectrum disorders, children who use augmentative and alternative communication, children with complex medical needs, and children with congenital disorders and genetic abnormalities. While I primarily see children ages 0-3 years, I may also see children up to age 5.
Home visits are provided within Missoula County. I am able to provide sessions in the community (parks, library, etc.) to families who live outside of Missoula County but are able to travel in to Missoula for sessions.
